National hero
In 1809, at Mount Bergisel four battles took place in the Franco-Prussian War. Andreas Hofer led the rebellion against Napoleon's invasion. After he was shot in 1810 he was considered a martyr. The Andreas Hofer monument is located in the park at the base of the Bergisel hill to commemorate their battles.
