Cathedral of Arucas and Surroundings

Good

When in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, I recommend you go visit a place outside of the capital, near the Barranco de Tenoya. There you will find a neo-gothic style town, where there are many historical buildings in the streets; the majority of them have a nineteenth-century architectonic style. The town of Arucas is known as Ciudad del Ron (Rum City), since it houses the Arehucas distilleries, the biggest in Canarias.

1.5 km north of town is the Arucas Mountain, 412 meters. It is the highest peak of the city. It has a restaurant that serves regional dishes and drinks, so you can enjoy a gastronomic route and you can enjoy some wonderful panoramic views of the island.

Artistic Treasure

It is important to highlight the church of San Juan Bautista, popularly known as the Cathedral of Arucas.

Even though it is not a cathedral and that its original configuration dates back to the 17th century, the current church was built using a neo-gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century. Inside it houses a considerable artistic treasure, with sculptural pieces of Italian origin, Flemish paintings and from the school of Andalucía, as well as works by Cristóbal Hernández de Quintana.
