Extremadura on a plate

Excellent

Perhaps the best way to finish up your visit to the region or to begin discovering the surprising sub-region of Los Ibores would be to sample the excellent dishes at the Avellaneda Restaurant. I’d especially recommend the tasting menu because it condenses the essence of the sub-region and, by extension, Extremadura as a whole.

It’s like if all of Extremadura could all of a sudden by felt by all five senses, but with taste coming out on top. The eyes are treated immediately by the view and exquisitely-presented dishes. Afterwards, your ears perk up as Carlos and his team lists the plates being served (ostrich paté, wild mushrooms, Torta de la Serena, jumbo shrimp poached in whiskey and onions), and then, luckily, your taste buds get their turn!

Impressive

I was surprised by the high quality of the meat, honey, berries, paté, and chestnuts. Despite not being widely-known or written about, it’s a really charming place and highly recommended. Next door there’s a rural hotel run by the same owners and it’s also worth a stay for its affordable price and high level of quality and service.

I’d suggest staying the night, taking a relaxing walk through the local area, and having a nice dinner in the restaurant.
