Amazing views

Ok, so, I honestly can't tell you much about the history or significance of this church....I'm not a "church tourism" kind of guy. But I am a fan of a good view from high up, and this is the best view to be had in Elche. Hands down. It costs 3 euros to go up to the top, making stops in the bell area along the way, but once you get up you're treated to absolutely breathtaking views of Elche in all its sunny glory. The sun-bleached plaster walls of the city next to the brilliant blue dome is absolutely striking. If you go on an off-day, you also might find that you have the whole rooftop to yourself.

Impressive church

This impressive church was built on the ruins where an old mosque once stood. Construction began in 1265 and was not completed until 1783. It underwent many reforms and adjustments at the hands of various architects, with different styles and decorative motifs being added until final basilica was created. Looking back, it's a compendium of all architectural styles that existed until the late 17th century.

The result is magnificent. Also, if you are here in mid-August you can see the "Misteri D'Elx" which was declared by UNESCO to be an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2001.

Basilica de Santa Maria

In downtown Elche next to the Archaeological Museum you'll find the stunning Basilica of Santa Maria. It is a baroque building that strikes your attention from afar both for the building itself as well as the blue dome that stands on top.

I got curious and saw that you could climb to the top. I always like finding the highest places to take in the views, so up I went up and it was worth it! From the top of the Basilica, you can see the Palmeral better than from anywhere else and you can really appreciate the location of this curious town right in the middle of this massive green forest.
