Religious Paintings

There is a small set of ruins and crypt next to the Church of San Francisco, which is crowded by tourists and elders. It used to be a cross north of the church, but has not been restored. There are, however, gardens and fountains which recall the figure of this Franciscan monk. Pedro de San Jose Betancur lived there in the 16th century and founded a hospital for the poor in Antigua. Because of this, he's the most venerated Christian figure in the area. He was consecrated in 2002 by Pope John Paul II and you can always see dozens of worshippers praying at his grave (to get there, you go down a small, well marked staircase).
