Bufadero de la Garita

Spectacular!

In most cases, nature is beautiful. In other cases, it is capricious, but in other, it is beautiful, capricious and dangerous.

I am talking of a geographic feature of incomparable beauty, which you can contemplate in the island of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, in the Garita beach.

It is two big cavities in the rocks from which the water flows filling them and emptying them at breakneck speed.

You might be asking yourself why it’s called “bufadero”. It is very simple: the rocks themselves have cavities in their interior, so when the tide goes up and fills them, these holes “spurt” the water while making a very characteristic sound, as if they were snorting (“bufando”, in Spanish).

The Best Example of this Formation

The Bufadero of the Garita is the best example of this type of geological formations in Gran Canaria.

This effect is produced thanks to a complex of prismatic basalt figures that receives through a submarine cavity, cave or volcanic tube the successive thrust of the ocean and expels it through a hole with great force, reaching considerable heights.

A Wonderful Place to Relax

It is a natural phenomenon produced with the coming and going of the tide, whose cave sucks in and ejects the water from the sea. It is a wonderful place to relax and to listen to the sound it produces.

You can only observe it for about two hours a day.

Beautiful Viewpoint

Great

It is a seaside town whose visit is a must just because of the wonderful views of la Garita. The beaches are made up of fine volcanic sand. The sound is something unique, so I recommend a visit.
