A major attraction

At the start of Hyde Street near Ghirardelli Square, you can take these famous cable cars. You must pay $6, unless you have a 3-day pass, and join the appropriate queue. Finally, after waiting your turn, you can get in! The Cable Cars were invented by the Scottish engineer A Hallidie, with the end of the cruelty of horse-drawn carriages in the nineteenth century. They were first used in 1873, and today there are three routes: Powell-Hyde (this is the main route, from Market St, through Lombard St. Union Square, Russian Hill ending at Ghirardelli Square), Powell-Mason (from Market St. to near Fisherman's Wharf), California St.
