Clackmannan Parish Church

1 review of Clackmannan Parish Church

Gothic church

Excellent

The present building which is situated in the Parish (Church of Scotland) was built between 1813 and 1815, following the design of the architect James Gillespie Graham, called "Georgian Gothic". But historical records only show that as early as 1249 there was a church in the place of the prior one. However, considering that this town was born as a cult center to San Mannan (Celtic Christian worship), one could say that there may have been an important enclave meeting of the church's followers then. Interestingly the location of the stone is very close to this church, along a straight line. It was under the control of the Augustinian monks of the Abbey of Cambuskenneth in Stirling during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
