Cormery Abbey

Cormery is a small town, crossed by the river Indre, whose valley can be explored by bike. The village is characterized above all by its eighth-century abbey. Created by ITHIER, abbot of St. Martin of Tours, it was developed by his successor Alcuin, preceptor of Charlemagne. (Yes sir! We're Talking about important people! ;)).

The Abbey, now almost hidden among houses in the village, became a place of pilgrimage and religious life known nationally until the 14th century. The town was formed around this important place. But after multiple invasions and battles, from the 14th century the place began to decline. The village remained, partly due to the road that still goes through it. It was "Berry Route" and is now "143 National".
