An essential attraction in Funchal
This was one of my favourite places in Funchal, and although it can be reached by road, nothing beats the magic of the cable car. The views show the marine background, and large mansions contrasting with the slums as you ascend the mountain, which takes about 10 - 15 minutes. You can buy a combined ticket with the Monte Gardens, and it's open all year round (except Christmas) from 9am to 17:45.
