Capital of the Hittites

The capital of the Hittite kingdom, one of the major civilizations of Anatolia, is one of the most magical places in the country. Indo-Europeans, settled in the peninsula and formed an important kingdom in the second millennium BC. Its capital was Hattusa. Today it is possible to visit its ruins which are near Bogazköy, in eastern Turkey. On the arid and cold Anatolian plateau is this huge city, with its walls, temples and monumental gates. There is little remaining, but it still manages to overwhelm. There are hardly any tourists, I would say almost none. Nearby is Yasilikaya, a Hittite sanctuary in a narrow canyon with images of their gods etched into the rock.
