Former Tower of Homage of Castillo de Mont-Aspre

This ancient "Tower of the Hours" or "Tribute" was documented for the first time in 889 when King Odo I of France made a donation to the Castillo of Mont-Aspre the only thing left that remains the same, this name was given as it was used as a bell tower in the fifteenth century. It stands above the old town center, a circular Romanesque tower 15 meters tall and built during the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. Between 1380 and 1482 several peasant revolts broke out called "War Remensas" kicking off the Catalan civil war against John II. The dilapidated state of the castle and the walls made, in 1478, the aforementioned King decide to tear down what was left of the castle and the stones were used to restore the church.

Architectural surprise

The historic center of Pals is full of architectural surprises, such as the Tower of Homage, visible from the access road, on high ground. It's also known as the Torre de les Hores, because when the castle was destroyed during the fifteenth century, this tower became a Gothic bell tower. The circular tower dates from the XI - XII centuries, was built on a mound and is fully integrated into the historic medieval town of Pals.
