As a well known royal port, Laredo was the setting for two journies that symbolically marked modern Spain: The journey of Joan of Castile, daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella, in 1496 to Flanders where she married Philip of Burgundy "The Beautiful" and the return in 1556, of their son Emperor Charles V, the anniversary of whose landing is still commemorated today with colorful celebrations, which take place every year in September.
