1 review of St. Augustine Catholic Church

An old church

New Orleans is essentially a Catholic city. Unlike other states, where evangelical religions are more popular, Louisiana is full of Catholic churches, and this is one of them. Founded in 1842, it was a prayer house for slaves and black freedmen. Black people began to "reserve" pews, paying for them for their family, and the white community started to do the same. What followed was known as the "War of the Pews", and was eventually won by the black community, who bought three pews for every one bought by white people. Thus, the church became a black domain. Walking around it, you can see the real history, as little has changed for 200 years.
