Active volcano in central Java
This is an active volcano in central Java. To ascend it you have to wear warm clothing and a mask, to protect against noxious smoke. You go 250 stairs up, after having climbed another 250 stairs on a nearby mountain to see the sunrise.
Locals revere the Gods by offering mainly poultry into the smoking crater, whereas the young and brave climb in to retrieve the offerings for their barbeques.
The photo is of the stage just before clibing on foot, still on ponies.
