Kenka matsuri

The festival of the fight or "Nada no Kenka Matsuri" (more commonly known as 'Kenka Matsuri') is held in Himeji every 14th and 15th October and is one of the most interesting traditional festivals in all of Japan. During the festival, male participants are divided into three teams: red team (under 26), yellow team (26 to 35) and white team (those over 35). Each group has a mikoshi, a portable temple, which you shake at the other teams to taunt them. The battle takes place in the temple square and is an incredible unique spectacle. It is always very crowded, so it is recommended to arrive early to find a good spot from which to watch and not be knocked by participants of the battle. ;)
