Lift to the Beach

During the summer of 2008, I toured several provinces in Andalusia. I was young at a the time and didn't really know Spain, and one of the coastal places I went to was the Malaga municipality of Torremolinos. Of course I was very surprised when the hotel told me to go down to the beach via the elevator, and of course, I had to ask why is there a lift down to the beach?
