Logrosán Mines

After many years of neglect, the Logrosán Mines are once again open. This old phosphorus mine, also known as the “Mine of Constanaza,” is now one of the 44 geological points that make up the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara GeoPark. There, you can learn about all the activities that took place in the depths of the mine both in the mine itself and in the visitors’ center. You can visit the mine to its second level (around 20 meters) with a miners’ helmet and light. The visit lasts around 45 minutes and you get to ride a mine cart back to the top. It’s an ideal place to visit as a family. The price is 3 Euros

The Mines of Costanaza were worked on and off from the end of the 19th century to their closure in 1944 when it measured 14 stories deep. After being abandoned for over 60 years, it has been restored as part of the Minas de Logrosán project and is one of 44 geo-sites in the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara GeoPark. During our visit, we went down to the second level (although they’re supposedly taking visitors deeper in the future) to see the vein of phosphorus that was used to make fertilizer and very popular with witches in the Middle Ages due to the green flames it produced when burnt.

The visit lasts around 45 minutes and you learn about the lives of the miners, their working conditions, the history of the mines, and the processes used to refine the minerals.

While the entire mine complex is huge, you can currently only visit the first two levels and no, it’s not claustrophobic whatsoever. One interesting piece of trivia: the mine is located on a fault line and the resulting heat and pressure has lead to the creation of tons of different mineral deposits, most importantly phosphorus. Nowadays, the mine is of the main points of interest in the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara GeoPark.

This is an old phosphorus mine that was closed for 60 years before being restored and becoming one of the 44 geological points of the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara GeoPark. You can currently visit two of the underground chambers.
