Basilica of notre dame

Without fear of contradiction, I can say that this is one of the most beautiful cathedrals I've seen in my life. To get to it you have to be willing: the cathedral is at the top of a hill. There are buses that go up but we preferred to climb up by foot. It was worth it. The neo-Byzantine cathedral is crowned by a statue of the Virgin Mary which is visible from any point of the city. That virgin is 11 meters high, which when you see from below seems little, but it is not ... It's huge! And that´s just the outside of it! From inside you can see gorgeous gold and red colors. Entrance is free, and I would say that you pay just with the climb you need to make. It is far, but possibly the best of the city. There are some views where you can see all the corners of Marseille!

The entire city is from here

Sanctuary of Notre Dame de la Garde. It's worth getting here with the tourist train that part of Vieaux Port: for 7 € for the round trip while visiting the coast and you can see the islands of Friuli. Once in the sanctuary, the return trip can be made every 20 minutes which is when the train returns. The basilica is coated on the inside with marble, and its architecture is very original, Arabic mixed Romanesque despite being recently built nineteenth century. At the top a statue of 10 meters high of the Virgin, visible from virtually the entire city. The basilica dominates the city and allow views to see the coast, the islands, the Vieaux Port and the whole metropolis.

Notre dame de la garde is the church ...

Notre Dame de la Garde is the church that dominates the city of Marseille. Colloquially called Bonne Mere, good mother, and to whom, the people of Marseilles, gives thousands of miracles, healings and various outcomes, which are to thank placing commemorative plaques all over the walls of the church. To climb up to you to take a bus from the Vieux Port, or you can walk up, but it is quite tiring, especially if it is hot. From above you can enjoy the pure air, the sea breeze and a beautiful view of the city: its port, the industrial area and the old town, as well as the islands are close, especially that of Frioul. His style is very different from the typical French Catholic church, it seems more Russian or Greek. The virgin is 160 meters high and has the baby Jesus in her arms. Once a year, on the day of Candlemas (February 2), people come at dawn to bless the typical sweet: the shuttles, a hard sweet and aniseed. You buy 12 in 12, one for each month of 'year, and climb up to the church where the priest blesses the faithful, especially the sailors, so the year is favorable.
