Monument to José Rodrigues Maio

This monument presides over Largo Passeio Alegre Avenue and is dedicated to José Rodrigues Maio, a heroic fisherman of Poveiro from the nineteenth century. He risked his life repeatedly to save shipwrecked fellow fishermen from the sea. This monument was made in 1909 and has been awarded several awards (medal of valor, merit, loyalty, etc.). It's known as "Cego do Maio".
