Le Mans is one of the most important old towns to be found in Europe. It dates back to the 3rd Century has Roman origins. Its walls were built during this period, and they were an irregular quadrilateral perimeter of 1,300 meters, with 26 towers attached that served as a defense bastion for those who wish to challenge the power of its inhabitants. Today only half of this large civil works are remaining. The walls were built in a series of panels which were formed by three rows of brick and 5 layers of limestone and sandstone pavements. The facade of the Cathedral of St. Julian, the watchman of Le Mans, displays a clear example of Gothic architecture.
