St. John's Church (Jaani Kirik)

1 review of St. John's Church (Jaani Kirik)

St. John's Church (Jaani Kirik)

The majestic church of San Juan, a brick temple dating from 1323, unique not only for being the oldest church in Tartu to survive, but for the original 1000 terracotta sculptures placed at various holes of the main portal. Reduced to ruins in the 1944 Soviet bombardment, now back in service after 16 years of restoration. Open since 2005. Many small terracotta sculptures retain only the head and have been deposited inside, safe from the Estonian weather. You can climb the tower, but check schedules.
