St. Mary's Cathedral

1 review of St. Mary's Cathedral

Roman Catholic cathedral in Galle

St. Mary’s Cathedral is a beautiful 19th century cathedral in the colonial city of Galle, Sri Lanka. While most of Galle’s colonial attractions are located in the walled Galle Fort area, St. Mary’s Cathedral is actually located in the city itself near the train station, so it makes a nice visit if you have some time to kill before heading out.

The church itself is spartan and beautiful in the way that most colonial churches in South Asia are: time-worn wood and tile details, pristine white-washed walls, and open lateral walls which let the pleasant tropical breeze blow through. Apparently, Galle has a sizable Roman Catholic population but when we went the church was totally empty. It was nice to explore the historic cathedral in silence and have a few moments of quiet reflection before the chaos that is public train travel in Sri Lanka.
