Tapestry of the Apocalypse

1 review of Tapestry of the Apocalypse

Longest and oldest tapestry

Angers Castle holds the key to a magnificent medieval article: the Apocalypse tapestry - a treasure in the form of upholstery from the 14th century. It's 140 meters long and 6 meters wide making it the longest and oldest tapestry. It's part of the historical legacy and cultural heritage of Pays de la Loire. Because of the delicacy of the work, it's on display in a darkened room to avoid direct contact with damaging sunlight. 70% of the original has been retained. This work of art was commissioned by Louis I, Duke of Anjou. It was once bequeathed to the Cathedral of Angers and for nearly three centuries, it formed part of its nave's decor.
