The Crofts

Currently known as The Crofts, it was the site for centuries of the prosperous and famous beasts and cattle market Rotherham. This was one of the largest markets in the region of South Yorkshire, and attracted numerous vendors of Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, as well as buyers from across the region. In the 1850s, 3000 sheep and 200 cows were typically sold each week. Although the market shut down due to animal diseases, it continued to be an important trading site for years after. You can still see buildings of this era, such as the Black Bull and the Cross Keys, two pubs that at one time were hotels where the traders would stay.
