The house of turtles

This Mayan memorial called 'House of Turtles' is located in the best place, Uxmal. It's very near the palace of the Governor, which, as its name implies, the building is decorated with ornate Mayan turtle figures. The turtles are associated with the rain god Chac. Mayan legend has it that when the people were suffering from a terrible drought they prayed to Chac and he commanded the precious treasure of the water. As I mentioned previously, all corners of the Uxmal archaeological site have Puuc architectural features. The short frieze columns rimming the temple under the sea are characteristic Puuc style.
