In the heart of the city

Quetzaltenango is Guatemala's second largest city. It had to have a cathedral worthy of the name. The cathedral is equal to the settlers built when the city was founded in the 16th century. It retains a colonial facade, but most of the cathedral was rebuilt after an earthquake that destroyed much of the city. The Church of the Holy Spirit, also called Quetzaltenango Metropolitan Cathedral was built by the Bishop Francisco Marroquín in 1535. The newer part of the church dates from 1899, and was destroyed by the earthquake in 1902. Xela has several parties throughout the year. There is the feast
