An old shrine

The Yasaka shrine or chapel, formerly called "Gion Shrine" is a Shinto shrine located in the traditional district of Gion. It was originally built in 656. The shrine includes several buildings, porches, and a central altar with many lanterns, which is one of the most popular parts. In the year 869 the mikoshi (small portable shrines) were carried around the city in the hope of ending an epidemic that was hitting at the time.
