All backpackers are fairly well off in Australia. In fact it is the option that I'd advise if you visit. We stayed at this place but as I say, if you look around there are several good options available. Many free airport pick ups, or offering to give the first dinner free, etc.. The best thing is that almost all accommodations organize excursions and you no longer have to move from place so that they come and find you. Backpacker environment, dorms or double rooms and some with their own bathroom. Shared kitchen and you can leave food in the fridge and no one touches it. Even at airports you'll see signs with backpackers, with a phone in the middle and photos and characteristics of each one.
