About United Airlines

United Airlines is a large American air carrier and is considered the largest airline in the world in terms of destinations offered. The company is based in Chicago, Illinois and maintains a fleet of over 700 Airbus and Boeing aircraft. United Airlines merged with competitor Continental Airlines in 2010 and is currently a member of the Star Alliance group. Despite its fame, flyer reviews of United Airlines tend to be negative as many passengers consider the company's customer service, facilities, and meals to be inferior those to newer airlines. The United Airlines website is busy at first glance but offers a front-and-center module to check in online and print a boarding pass. There is also a module to see your flight information and details of your reservation. However, to see your United Airlines flight status, you must navegate to the “Travel Information” pull-down menu. This same section also offers information on United Airlines' baggage allowance policy (there are baggage fees for all checked luggage in economy class, though the specific fees depend on the trajectory in question) and pet policy (small animals can be carried on for a fee of $125.00 per leg of the flight plus an additional $125.00 for every domestic layover lasting more than four hours).  United Airlines has made headlines in recent years as being one of the first major American air carriers to offer in-flight Wi-fi connections. Wi-fi is available only on certain domestic aircraft and passengers should check the details of their reservations to see if Wi-fi is available on their flight.

  • United Airlines is one of the better major American carriers, though it is somewhat lacking when compared against a lot of the international carriers coming out of Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia. A fair portion of the gripes against United arise from the company's baggage fees: they charge $25.00-$35.00 per checked bag on national flights for non-military passengers (though they thankfully give you a free bag on international flights). However, United Airlines is ahead of the pack in certain aspects. For example, they've begun offering in-flight Wi-Fi on certain flights in the US, though they do charge a fee.
