The new South Beijing Railway Station is one of the largest in Asia, having opened in August 2008 for the Olympic games. Now it has become an important station connecting Beijing with the surrounding large cities by express train. For example, the intercity express between Beijing and Tianjin leaves from this station and travels at over 350km/hr. The old station was virtually destroyed to build this new one, which was designed by the Hong Kong-based Terry Farrell firm in collaboration with the Tianjin Design Institute. More than 30 thousand passengers per hour pass through the station using the automated ticketing systems and modern infrastructure to ease the inevitable congestion.
