Iconic Monument

The steeple of the great Augustinian is an iconic monument that dominates the neighborhood of the Carmelites. Long ago this place was a church and a convent, which was located outside the city walls but after the construction of the latest wall in the fourteenth century it was included inside of the walls. The church and convent were destroyed during the French Revolution, just like many religious buildings in Avignon were. There is evidence that Avignon is sitting between two tectonic plates and that there were earthquakes during Ice Age and Iron Age. The last earthquake of significant magnitude occurred on June 11, 1909.
