Cemetery of Zunil

Worth a visit

Zunil is a small Mayan village in the region of Quetzaltenango. The town itself is not very big, but it is significant because it's a crossroads for the region's big, important market. The cemetery overlooks the city. If you climb to the Zunil volcano, you'll find it on the left. It's not to be missed with its colourful tombs! It's known for the fervour of the common people and their dead. Death there is something cheerful, and you can go to grandma's grave with food, drinks and music, and tell her what happened during the year, who got married, who died, who was born. The festival of the dead is celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November, during All Saints.
