Chapel of the Founder

2 reviews of Chapel of the Founder

Next to the monastery of Batalha, there's a beautiful chapel called "Founder's Chapel" because it was built to house the tomb of Joao I, who commissioned the monastery to be built after the victory of Aljubarrota in 1385. The chapel has a spectacular starry dome and is surrounded by arches containing decorative elements that make it even more beautiful. Being late Gothic style, the chapel is filled with decorative ornaments everywhere and has a spectacular stained glass window that projects thousands of different colours throughout the day. Besides the tomb of Joao I, other Portuguese personalities are also buried, like the wife and daughter of the founder, and the Duke of Lancaster, which I think was the one who married the daughter.
