Typical Cuisine and Silbo

Excellent

Even though the place doesn’t seem very inviting from outside (it looks like the typical highway restaurant), the food was great. Just like the sign says, it is “a sign of identity” (“seña de identidad), since we could try authentic and typical gastronomy, with a special silbo (whistle language) demonstration.

Potent meals based on a watercress stew, a cheese called “almogrote”, a delicious pineapple salad with cheese, grapes and lettuces, with a dressing make of palm honey, an “old fashioned” tuna casserole and pig with rosemary. It was accompanied by bread and sauces. And afterwards came the dessert: an original “gofio” (toasted corn) mousse with palm honey (spectacular, and I don’t even like gofio). We also had a “barraquito” (coffee, milk, condensed milk and liquor).

The Best Watercress Stew

Casa Conchita is a must stop. Conchita has long retired, leaving space for new generations, but the food is still as humble and honest as it was in the seventies, when Conchita opened the doors to the restaurant.

When I say humble and honest I mean that they have managed to maintain a menu with authentic food from the place, even though it has also introduced new dishes, but always cooking the dishes with local ingredients.

My favorites are the soft white cheese (in Canary Islands, the cheeses are mainly made with goat milk) and of course the almogrote (cured cheese with paprika, it looks like an orange pâté).

Generous Servings

Great

We really liked the food. The watercress stew is great, but what we liked the most was the “escaldón” (typical dish made with corn flour, broth and other ingredients). They have generous servings, so if you don’t eat much it is better not to order too much and come back another day to try new things.

Very Recommendable

Typical food from the Canary Islands, with mouthwatering watercress stew and “almogrote” (cured cheese)…they recommended the place in our hotel and it is really worth going there and repeating!
