1 review of Feast of the Dead in Guatemala

Celebrating Death

In Guatemala death is joyful. All Saints is held on the 1st November and is the day of the dead. A delicious dish called Fiambre is prepared. It is made of various meats and sausages, and is taken to the cemetery to lay it on the grandmother's grave while discussing what happened during the year. The tombs are decorated like Christmas trees with flowers and colourful decorations and there are marimba groups who come to play songs in the cemetery. Through the night people continue chatting and lighting candles at the cemetery. One nice place to go, is Santa Maria de Jesus, on the slopes of the water volcano and is a town that dominates Antigua Guatemala.
