George Buchanan Column

1 review of George Buchanan Column

His work on the responsibilities of the heads of state had much influence on the constitutional changes that took place in 1688 and the creation of the American Constitution

This historical monument is situated in the center of the village of Killearn, at the start of the High Street. It was constructed in the year 1788 and was paid for by the villagers. Killearn is situated to the north of Glasgow, on the way to the lake of Loch Lomond, the largest loch in Scotland. George Buchanan was born at Killearn. He became famous throughout Europe for his poetry and philosophy works. He was a 16th Century humanist, and a Buchanan clan member. He went to University in Paris, and spoke Latin and Greek perfectly, plus French and Scottish. He also translated Hebrew texts. He was very satirical about the corruption of the church in the middle ages, and that led to him being sent to prison on more than one occasion.
