Island of St Nicola

5 reviews of Island of St Nicola

Like most tourists visiting the Tremiti...

Like most tourists visiting the Tremiti Islands we stayed on San Domino. In fact, we stayed in one of the buildings which were originally built as an internment camp for gay men by Mussolini. The people in the village were extremely kind to us. For Pasquetta there was a barbecue and disco in the square. We were drinking in the bar of our host Angelo and the locals kept filling our plates with spicy sausage and herb flavoured lamb.

The island can be explored by boat or on foot. There is a network of paths through the pine forest with branching paths that can be scrambled down to reach the rocky coves and limpid sea. It is also worth to follow the path marked Colle dell'Ermita to the 116m summit. In late April we were alone amongst the buzzing bees drinking nectar from the wild thyme, lizards scuttling amongst the rocks and birds calling to their mates. We were very excited to see hoopoes.
