A complete collection of art

The Lázaro Galdiano Museum, located at 122 Serrano Street in the La Castellana district, is a complete collection of art in its many forms.
The museum bears the name of the great art collector Don Lázaro Galdiano, who donated his marvelous collection and the building that housed it to the Spanish government.
It first opened its doors as a house-museum in 1951 and had a significant renovation in 2004.
Lázaro Galdiano (1866-1947) was a great art collector, book-lover, and editor. The collection features works from primarily Spanish artists and houses famous paintings such as The Witches’ Sabbath by Goya, and St. John the Baptist in the Wilderness by Hieronymus Bosch, among others.

Collection of Collections

Madrid's Lazaro Galdiano Foundation Museum is one of the city's most amazing (and inexplicably unsung) museum gems. Its founder was what's called a "man of means," one of these 19th century types who had the wealth and worldly education to pursue his hobbies of archaeology, fine art, and culture studies. Today's museum is the result of that quest.

What we have is a collection of collections; everything from Greek sculptures to Asian tapestries to silverware, porcelains, and fine art, including works by famous painters like Goya, Hieronymus Bosch, and El Greco. The collection, though, is only half the fun. The other is the palatial estate of tended gardens, winding staircases, amazing frescoes, and the vibe of aristocratic opulence of the kind only found in 1800s Europe.
