Market on the Banks of the Niger

2 reviews of Market on the Banks of the Niger

The Venice of the Niger River

I absolutely loved Mopti, which is one of the places I would love to go back to one day, and especially this part, the port, on the banks of the Niger river. Mopti is called the Venice of the Niger, although it's not exactly a city built entirely on canals, but in the large port there are boats that are stacked (they're the typical boats all along the Niger, with bright colors that are full of goods and/or people). This is the home port of trade to Timbuktu and Gao, with its own shipyard where pinasses are still made by hand, even the nails, one by one, are made by blacksmiths. Alongside the shipyards you'll find the fish market, where the Captain is king (with yummy recipes).
