Nunukan is a small fishing village that owes its high quantity of tourist traffic to the fact that it is the nearest town to Malaysian Borneo, so that the traffic of goods and passengers between Tawau, Malaysia, and Tarakan, Indonesia, is relentless.
From Nunukan out also ferries to other islands of Indonesia, and that is why the port area has plenty of restaurants and some hotels. The Melati is the best of all rooms with fan, television, and air conditioning.
