Oia

This small coastal town, near Guarda, has the beautiful monastery of Santa Maria, located on the edge of the sea. It was built in the twelfth century and owes its appearance of strength to frequent pirate attacks on the shores. In fact, the monks themselves fired guns against a squad of North Africans, sinking one of their ships. Picture the scene.
