1 review of Pillory or Pelourinho Esposende

Symbol of power of the local council

The Pillory (or Pelourinho Esposende) is in a small square that's at one end of the commercial street December 1st, but until 1925 it was across the street from the Pacos do Concelho and is a Property of Public Interest. Such monuments were built to symbolize the power of the local council. It's granite and consists of a hexagonal shaft column, placed on a stepped square base and finished at the top with a capital carved with floral motifs and the cross of Christ. The whole is surmounted at its apex with a sphere on which there's a cross.
