Plaza del Triunfo

One of the most touristy plazas in Seville

One of the most visited and touristy plazas in Seville is, without doubt, the Plaza del Triunfo (Triumph Square), it is surrounded by the most significant buildings of the city: the Alcázar, the Cathedral, the Giralda, and the General Archive of the Indies.

Throughout its history it has had various names, such as Plaza de los Cantos (Pebble Square) or Plaza del Hospital del Rey (King's Hospital Square). It is a very large square, pedestrian, with a garden area and two monuments: el templete del Triunfo (Victory shrine), next to the Archive of the Indies, that commemorates the "triumph" of the city to not have anyone killed during the Lisbon earthquake, being that they were celebrating the feast of All Saints inside the cathedral, when the event occurred and it collapsed in part.

Nestled in the centre of the historic quarter

The Plaza del Triunfo (Triumph Square) can be found nestled in the centre of the historic quarter consisting of the Alcázar, the Cathedral and the Archive of the Indies. Declared In 1987 World Heritage by UNESCO.

In the fifteenth century the square was known by the name of Plaza de los Cantos (Pebble Square), due to the fact that it was the gathering place for the Quarry-stones and ashlars used in the construction of the Cathedral, which ran throughout this century.

Its actual name comes from the baroque shrine existing besides the said plaza named triumph with the image of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus in its interior. Built in 1757 in gratitude for not having suffered personal injuries during the Lisbon earthquake of 1755.

A tranquil place

The Plaza del Triunfo (Triumph Square), for me a tranquil place where there are good views of the Giralda, good access to the neighbourhood of Santa Cruz and also with entrance to the Alcázar of Seville.
