    Maison Rouge en Provence
On our last visit to Aix-en-Provence, we looked for somewhere that was a little out of town so we could enjoy the wonderful Provencal countryside. The house is painted in a charming reddish color (this the name) and the owner was very cool to us. They serve breakfast on the terrace, as you can see in the photo, and is a very memorable experience.

    Hôtel de Marignane
The private house Marignane, located in a street parallel to Cours Mirabeau, has a facade that was surely charming in its day, but now its a bit run down. However the history invited here me here as towards the end of the seventeenth century, the poor and young Mirabeau seduced the young lady Marignane, a rich heiress. Eventually they married, but the father of the girl did not agree with the marriage, cut her off. Mirabeau owed so much to city merchants, that he ended up incarcerated at the chateau d'If.

    Hôtel Gautier du Poët
To get to the Hôtel Gautier du Poët, take the Cours Mirabeau until it ends and walk to the east. For a long time, a water mill stood here and milled flour for all the local bakers. The hotel was built in 1730 by Henri Gautier, the Treasurer of Provence at the time who got rich off his position. Don't forget to notice the beautiful wrought iron balconies and the different patterns of each window.

    Hôtel Isorad de Vauvenargues
At number 10 del Cours Mirabeau, the largest and most beautiful of Aix-en-Provence, the house is Isorad deVauvenargues. Note the beautiful facade, unfortunately, a little blackened, especially the iron forged balcony. The building is also known for the sad fact that here is where the Marquis of Entrecasteau, Parliament President, killed his wife, Anglique of Castellanne.

If you opt to do a road trip through Provence, the city of Aix en Provence is a must. It is worth spending a night there and enjoying the romantic atmosphere of terraces and restaurants. "Hotel des Augustins", on the Cours Mirabeau, is a good place to stay downtown. It's in a historic building which was once an Augustinian convent (thus the name), which hosted Martin Luther himself. Hôtes des Chambres L'Epicerie
In the middle of the historic centre of Aix-en-Provence, in a small street that seems like something out of Sherlock Holmes, there was an old spice shop. Today it's been transformed into a hybrid: at lunchtime, a restaurant, and at night a B&B. It is run by Luc, a nice gentleman who counts among his ancestors none other than Leonardo Da Vinci. The B&B has five rooms on the upper floors, two of which are actually suites that can accommodate a family of four. Each room has its own private bathroom. The rooms are named after spices ... I remember Cinnamon and Vanilla, and I think the others might have been Rosemary, Thyme and Lavender, but I'm not sure. On the ground floor there is plenty of bric-a-brac - tin cans, newspaper clippings, ladles, mousetraps, model cars, gardening tools, boxes of cough drops, scales, bird cages and so on ... at first glance, it looks more like Ali Baba's cave than a restaurant, and the four tables in the room seem like they're there by chance. The manager explains that in reality, it's not a real restaurant with a set menu; you eat the same food from the local monastery, with vegetarian dishes made from strictly organic products purchased in the morning at the nearby fruit and vegetable market. The prices are reasonable (13 euros for a meal excluding coffee), and there are four courses: soup, cooked vegetables, mixed vegetables, and baked vegetables. The rooms, which are lovely and clean, cost from 100 euros (two people) to 130 (the suites for 4), including a hearty breakfast with plenty of tea and jam, plus homemade cakes and fried eggs. The garden, enclosed by four walls, allows you to relax lying on a deck chair and reading a good book ... a great location if you want to spend a few days surrounded by history!
