Great cocktail lounge and even better “gastrobar”

You’re walking towards a destination, a cocktail lounge that everyone’s told you great things about. A few feet before arriving at the door, something to the left catches your eye.. It’s the stairs leading up to Santa Bárbara church, a wonder in its own right that deserves a few moments of your time. We’re on Bárbara de Braganza street and we’ve arrived at our destination, La Cabrera.

After going through the door, you realize that something special is going to happen this evening. The atmosphere of this bar is different, the air is special, the aroma is different from any other bar you’ve been to. It’s the same sensation that I felt when I entered Del Diego (another cocktail loung you can’t miss). And, suddenly, you realize there's two floors: the first floor with a charming bar and an equally charming basement level where you can sit down at small tables. The decision isn’t easy. We came to drink a gin and tonic and a cocktail, but the whole idea of the "gastrobar" has us heading downstairs to a table.

We choose one of the cozy tables. There are people all around us, but the background music is at the perfect volume so each conversation stays within its table (the music is really good, by the way). As we settle into our seats, we take a look at the menu and say to ourselves ¨THIS PLACE IS AWESOME!¨ They have a ton of cocktails, and from the first second you feel like you can pick whatever’s on the menu and you’ll like it. You realize they care, and you start to feel comfortable at the bar. Then… what a surprise! The waiter showed up with two glasses of water and some chips. Very nice! This is very good water, the waiter then explained how they included mint and lemon to make it flavorful.

I ask the waiter for advice on what to order. I tell him that I want to try a good gin, a good gin and tonic. I tell him I’ll try whatever he brings out (hoping it’s the typical eccentric gin and tonic with raspberries and limes all the works). We also ordered a Tom Collins (gin, sour mix and soda water). My gin and tonic arrives and the big surprise is that it comes with Schweppes. The waiter’s brought me the most original gin and tonic they have, cool! He brought an English gin, very aromatic in my opinion, and I try it out a few minutes later. The waiter tells me this gin is perfect to have with Schweppes (not Fever Tree). It’s impressive, really good, the best that I’ve ever tried. It’s called "Sipsmith." The Tom Collins is made for 4 people but we were only 2. Later on, we ordered another gin and tonic, but this time Tanqueray Rangpur with Fever Tree. It’s stronger but equally refreshing and recommendable. It was then that we started to get hungry and we decided to try to tartare with some cod fritters. JACKPOT! Seriously, both plates were unimaginably good. They were very scant, with an inflated price, but the flavor was amazing.

In summary, it’s a nook you can’t miss on your gin and tonic or cocktail route. I give it a 10!

The best manhattan in madrid

Le Cabrera is a new cocktail bar lead by one of Madrid’s best bartenders: Diego Cabrera from Argentina. It opened its doors in January 2010 and quickly gained a reputation as one of Madrid’s best cocktail bars. Luis Gallusi is responsible for the interior decorating and all the waiters’ uniforms are from El Ganso, one of Madrid’s most stylish shops.
The gin and tonic menu is more than ample and the drinks are prepared with the upmost care. But Le Cabrera doesn’t stop there. Their selection of gin, vodka, rum, and whisky is unmatched in Madrid and mixed cocktails are the house specialty. Diego’s favorite is a Manhattan and he prepares them expertly, and we always take his recommendations. The team, led by Diego, Ruth, and Michel, are all charming and treat you with professionalism.
This summer, they’re taking over the terrace of the Casa América (the restaurant, too) and they’ll soon be opening their second branch in Paseo Rosales. Without a doubt, Le Cabrera is a place you can’t miss.

A worthwhile visit

Good atmosphere, nice decoration, great service, and incredible cocktails. And it’s not at all expensive considering the quality and the neighborhood.
