Living Testimony to Jewish Tenacity

The dramatic story of the Ethiopian Jews or Falashas (Amharic word meaning foreigner or wanderer), which gained notoriety especially in 1984, following their spectacular emigration to Israel, the land of their ancestors, is living testimony to the tenacity with which groups and individuals struggle to preserve their historical legacy despite numerous attempts at cultural genocide and in spite of living in miserable conditions. There were more than 18,000 Falashas who left in a dramatic airlift. Had this not happened there would be no Jews left in Ethiopia. The Mengistu regime did not support the Jews, but you know what the Jews are capable of doing for their town.
