Indestructible and Impenetrable

Fort Liédot, together with Fort de la Rade, forms an extensive defensive structure on the island of Aix. In 1808, Napoleon ordered this fort to be built so "indestructible and impenetrable" that no human being would be able to get out of it once they were inside. The Liédot Fort was completed in 1834 and had a capacity of 600 people. That was a pretty good number considering the era in which it was designed. As far as many buildings go, Fort Liédot was also used as a detention center for political and military prisoners. Today it's another gem from the past that you can find on the island of Aix.
