Sweets from the Sisters

If you like homemade sweets, you can’t miss the Convent of Santa Clara, located in the plaza of the same name. Here, you can buy authentic regional sweets made by hand by the nuns of the Order of San Francisco.

The Convent was founded by Doña Aldonza Torres Golfín (whose likeness graces the left side of the façade) and is located outside the old city walls. It was built between the 16th and 17th centuries in the Baroque Mannerist style. Highlights include the doorway by Juan de Villoldo and Álvaro Garcia and a pediment topped by the image of St. Francis, the sides of which bear the coats of arms of the Golfín, Torres, Paredes, and Ribera clans.
