We got up very early in the morning to avoid the hot weather that is typical for an August in Senegal, and hopped on a small boat with the intention of seeing up-close the hippos who live in the river Gambia. It was dawn and the views were beautiful. The fishermen and their boats were out with their nets, and they all knew each other. As we went down the river, we enjoyed the great variety of birds and wildlife that live in this part of the world, as well as the views. After over an hour of sailing, we finally found the family of hippos. The desire to see them up close was stronger than our fear that they might get up and capsize us.
